On My Needles
I, like most of us, have different projects for different occasions. My “at home” is usually slightly more complicated knitting. Multiple charts may be in involved or it’s just too large to leave the house. My “knitting with friends knitting'” is usually mid range stuff that may require some attention but will still allow me to have conversations. My “lunch time & transit knitting or I’ve just had an exhausting day and my brain is slowly oozing out of my ears knitting” has to be simple and straight forward. I need to be able to toss it in my bag and not have to worry about where I am in the pattern. I realized this week that this type of knitting was lacking. So I checked my Year of Projects list and settled on the Klennex covers to add to my Christmas packages. There should be more to show you, but I ripped back the first one when I realized that it was in fact going to be too small. So on my way home I picked up some actual purse sized Kleenex packages so I won’t make the same mistake again.
The other reason I am very happy to be doing this project is because it is using up some yarn that would otherwise have continued to sit in my stash. I won this two years ago at the Stitch ‘n Pitch and have had no idea what to do with it. (I love the fact that I can’t remember what I had for dinner last night, but can almost always tell you where any particular skein of yarn came from.) I don’t like the way it feels. It doesn’t feel like a natural fibre even though it’s 70% wool. It certainly wasn’t going to end up on my feet. But the self patterning is really cute and it will make great little cases.
Between my pages
I am struggling through the last few pages of WinterWood. The scariest part of the novel is the fact that the main character, and therefore the author, has an unusual fascination with My Little Ponies. (Did you know that there was a Pony named Pinkie Pie? I didn’t and really I don’t feel that my life has been enriched in any way by knowing that.) He’s also brought up the Care Bears a few times. I guess this is where the concept of Modern Day Gothic Horror story comes in. ‘Cause I gotta tell you, it scares the heck out of me.
But, my next book is already on my nightstand waiting for me and I am sure it’s going to be a better read. Day After Night is by Anita Diamant. I first read her years ago on a visit to my In-laws house. Everyone in my husband’s family are voracious readers. So when I realized that both my mother and sister-in-law were reading the same copy of the a book at the same time, I figured it had to be good. (And the mini battle that was happening for time with the book was rather intriguing to watch.) At one point they both made the mistake of being away from the book at the same time, so I snatched it up and by the time the realized what had happened I was hooked on The Red Tent. As you can imagine three people all trying to read the same copy of one book is a little problematic and by the time we left I was only half way through. About six months later I bought my own copy and read the book from cover to cover. It is a wonderful example of women’s literature and I highly recommend it. It is a wonderful narrative about the lives of the women in the Old Testament. I admit I am not overly familiar with the Old Testament, however, the Red Tent was a complex and engrossing read. So when I came across Day After Night in the bargain section of my neighbourhood bookstore it had to come home with me. Based in 1945, it tells the story of four women displaced from society after being liberated from a concentration camp. I have high hopes that this book will be as moving and fascinating as her first book. And really, I need something to erase Winterwood from my memory.
